From a devotion on Skitguys Rather than asking, “What is God’s will for my life,” we ought to ask, “Is my life in line with God’s will.” This might seem like semantics, but hear me out. The first question assumes that God has an actual plan for your life that you must find. It is as though He has some cosmic blueprint of your life that you must struggle to figure out. I don’t even think that is biblical. But that way of thinking can also be debilitating in that we won’t move unless we somehow sense that we have found the right path. Even more problematic is that it puts the focus on us. It makes our lives center stage, not God’s will. We want God to show us what we should do because we want what is in our best interest. We think that if we find His will then things will go well for us. We need to take the focus off our little “p” plan and put it on God’s big “P” Plan. What we ought to ask is, “Is my life in line with God’s will?” This puts the emphasis where it needs to be – on God’s redemptive and restorative plan for this world. Will this decision be in line with God’s desire to bring people into relationship with Him? Will this decision keep me in line with God’s commandments? God’s will is much bigger than your life. When we look at it this way, we become less narcissistic and we will find much more freedom in making decisions.
