From a friend of mine - great information on Voter Registration - worth the read! PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT TO WOMEN WHO HAVE EVER BEEN MARRIED OR DIVORCED Out state legislature, in their zeal to combat voter fraud that doesnt exist here in Texas, has changed the requirements to vote. While, in my opinion, this change was made to limit minority voters, it has disenfranchised most married women as well as the elderly who no longer have drivers licenses. FACT: The State of Texas REQUIRES that - if you change your name at marriage - your drivers license reflect your first name, first letter of your MAIDEN name, and your last name. Regardless of the fact that my legal name is Vicki Lyn Ferrantello, the State of Texas requires that my drivers license be in the name of Vicki A Ferrantello (my maiden name was Anderson). FACT: To vote in any election you must now provide identification. For most people this is their drivers license (in the past you could vote by showing your voter registration card). If that identification does NOT EXACTLY MATCH the name on your voter registration you are limited to a provisional ballot which is not counted until long after voting day. FACT: Most womens voter registration is in their legal name (first name, middle name/initial, last name). Consequently, it does NOT MATCH your drivers license. SOLUTION: I live in Dallas County. I was able to do this online by going to dallascountyvotes.org. There you will find links to verify the name on your voter registration card and to online update your name. To do this you will need your drivers license (to provide multiple identifying codes) and your voter registration. The website states that it takes AT LEAST 30 DAYS to update their records and to receive a corrected voter registration certificate. DO THIS NOW! 2014 is an election year. Dont wait until next fall to think you will have time to do this. Everyone has the right and privilege to vote. Attempts to disenfranchise THIS woman just isnt going to happen. If I havent received my new voter registration with the name MATCHING that as it appears on my drivers license in 30 days I WILL be following up on it. FYI - you can contact the voter registration office (214/819-6300) to obtain the info to have someone come to you to obtain identification and provide a substitute identification card for those who are elderly, no longer drive, and no longer have a valid drivers license. My sister recently did this. They came to her, verified her identity, took a photo and sent her an ID. DO THIS NOW IF YOU WANT TO VOTE IN 2014!
