The rational mind knows that when a righteous person dies, that all their pain and suffering is over. they will never again know hurt, envy, greed, or loss. they are with God and his angels and we should be happy for them, but we still feel an overwhelming sense of pain. sometimes to the point of literal, physical, pain. According to the teaching, this pain comes from the fact that when our loved ones leave us, they cant stand the thought of one minute without us. so, they tear a piece out of the souls of those they will miss and take these fragments with them to heaven. That rip in our souls is the pain we feel. but you can still find comfort in knowing that part of you is with your loved one, and in turn, with your God. And at the end of our earthly life not only will we become a whole spirit again, but we will receive the missing pieces from those who loved us the most
