From a member: I know a lot of our PTSD issues are compounded by money problems. Mine sure are. I have seen a post or two about people asking about financial help for vets. I recently applied through a group called USAcares at usacares.org and could not be happier. They require you to at least have an open claim through the VA while others require you to be 30 or 50% service connected. For me, I am still waiting on my claim to be approved and rated so this was a huge upside to me. The process goes like this, apply, they take 3-5 days to respond unless its an emergency. They have you fill out a budget worksheet. You have to have some kind of proof of a hardship, for me it was a 3 week hospitalization that took me out of work with no pay. A copy of the late bills that you need help with. And of course, a copy of your DD-214. All in all it took about a week for me. I was able to call the companies that my bills were late for and explain my situation and that I had applied for financial assistance and it may be a few days and they were willing to wait instead of shutting my services off. They paid my gas and electric bills, to the sum of almost $900, yesterday and I am ecstatic! If any of you are in a real need for financial help please contact them before you get so bad that it adds to the depression associated with PTSD. I wish I had asked them for help a lot sooner, maybe I wouldnt have ended up in the hospital at all. They claim that their average amount that they help with is around $650. I plan on making some donations to them after I get back on my feet, they saved my ass on this one. Kept my electric on and got my gas turned back on. I dont work for them and Im in no way associated with them, I just remember seeing people asking about assistance and thought Id share my experience.
