From a short story Im working on- Khayal She sat straight up in bed, gasping for breath and recognition of her surroundings. It was already 5:30. Good, she thought, better than waking up at 2 or 3 and trying to fall back asleep. She had given up coffee in hopes with would decrease the steady fraying of her nerves, but still had a small amount of caffeine in her blend of oolong and Chinese Gun Powder tea. She set the electric kettle to boil while she took her 3 minute shower. When the kettle whistled its urgent scream, she turned off the shower, wrapped a towel around herself and set the tea to steep while she dressed. Five minutes later, she, and her tea, were ready to go. It wasn’t that hard when all you had to do was don a uniform. Her black eyes quickly adjusted to the darkness that was just subtly starting to fade to day. The wind whipped up from the Southwest, scattering a hot dusting of sand across her face and she opened a bobby pin with her teeth to set a few strands of her thick black hair back to rights. She wished she hadn’t had to cut it, but it was, after all, a liability. She moved between the buildings and back alleyways as stealthily as the shadows for which she was named- Khayal.
