From all accounts, J.J. Cale never wanted to be a famous musician and certainly never wanted to be a rock star. Apparently, when Clapton first heard his early compositions he coerced Cale into putting out a collection of his tunes in the album “Naturally.” And shortly after that, Eric made “After Midnight” a worldwide sensational hit song and J.J. Cale soon became an international celebrity. But even after so many of his compositions became hit songs for so many artists, Cale seemed to revel in his general obscurity. Nonetheless, legends like Clapton frequently showed up at J.J. Cale performances willing to simply back up the musical genius they so admired. I am sure that Clapton is crushed emotionally by the passing of his good friend but I’m not sure he could feel any worse than the rest of J.J. Cale’s devoted admirers.
