From an educational perspective, throughout history, nations whose youth have learned to play and master the art of chess have produced some of the greatest minds and achievements in history. Not to mention military & political strategists. Among other attributes, chess teaches you to think analytically, plan, anticipate, attack, defend, when to retreat, and humility - i.e., when to resign and fight another day. Before there was RISK and Call of Duty there was chess. During The Cold War with the USSR the USA shocked the Soviets when, then US Grandmaster Bobby Fisher defeated the then USSR Grandmaster, Boris Spasky, in Iceland, at what was then considered a Russian game. Heres a great piece from John Hopkins University on the incredible merits of chess. Enjoy!
