From an email from Defenders of Wildlife; the link to the petition does not come through, but the petition should be available at the D OF W Facebook page: Tragedy has struck in New Mexico. Defenders has learned that yet another of one of the world’s most endangered wolves was shot and killed. This time, a Mexican gray wolf mother known as alpha female 1108 (F1108) was the victim of this killing. F1108 had been mothering a den of young pups, all of which are assumed to be dead. Please take action today-- urge the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to fully investigate this killing, and take appropriate action to prevent this from happening again. With fewer than 80 Mexican gray wolves left in the wild, and only two breeding pairs, the death of this female and her pups is a tragic loss. This mother and her pups were vital players in the race to recover this struggling population of wolves. This news comes in the wake of a new proposed rule from FWS that could essentially prevent Mexican gray wolves from ever fully recovering. While they would remain listed as a distinct subspecies, the proposed rule completely ignores a critical step that scientists say must be taken to recover the Mexican gray wolf — dispersal into suitable unoccupied habitat. We need our outrage to be heard. We need FWS to realize that we refuse to stand by idly and allow the Mexican gray wolf to move closer to the brink of extinction! With each passing day Mexican gray wolves drift closer to extinction in the wild — please urge FWS to do everything in their power to investigate this questionable killing and implement a sound recovery plan for the future of Mexican gray wolves.
