From before the First World War until her retirement in 1949, Lilian Ream’s company was present at virtually every local event from civic ceremonies to garden parties, from amateur dramatics to football matches, from christenings to funerals. In addition to the thousands of portraits taken in her studios, there were commissions from local businesses, the Town Council and, most importantly, local newspapers. For The Wisbech Standard, in particular, she was their photographer on call, photographing even the most humdrum of news items such as minor accidents, retirements and golden wedding anniversaries. The result is an astonishingly rich collection that illustrates the life of a small town in all its aspects. It is, literally, a record of Wisbech from cradle to grave, with everything in-between. The negatives have suffered badly from neglect but thousands of negatives have survived. Surely, no one who lived in the area escaped Lilian’s camera’s lens.
