From chapter 3 (Courage) of my book, One With the People: As Topangah quietly listens, Sani continues, “Our life of service, Topangah, most certainly and ever so silently becomes our gift, a gift of great worth, not unlike Buffalo draped in the white winter solitude of the North. Upon acceptance, our gift finds it way deep into the hearts of those who, like Grandfather Sun, dance with us, as well as those who rise another morning to dance after us.” In deep contemplation, Topangah remains silent. Hearing nothing from Topangah, Sani adds, “Our gift, not unlike Grandfather Sun’s gift, covers a great distance and, in its stillness and solitude, it always gives back. It has no other purpose. In living our lives as gifts for another, the people see us approaching even when the path we walk lies beyond the horizon. Because time and space can no longer separate us, we can never be far away. In our giving, Topangah, we are always nearby. And in our leaving, our gift keeps us close, as if it finds a place in the hearts of those we leave behind to draw life — and other gifts — from all who walk under the warm light of Grandfather Sun.”
