From chapter 9, A Techicolor Lightning Storm Version 1 There - TopicsExpress

From chapter 9, A Techicolor Lightning Storm Version 1 There were scattered patches of evergreen trees; firs, cedars, yew and pines, here and there. Among them some vine maples had taken hold and were becoming small copses that would be masses of color in the fall. There were some cottonwoods and birch trees in the low areas where it was damp, possibly hiding small streams or springs. But most of the forest they were traveling through now was a broad expanse of oak trees, their huge crowns shading massive trunks and limbs. Some of them must have been eight or ten feet through; and beneath them, a veritable park. Soft grasses with scattered patches of blackberry bushes and Oregon grape creating habitat for bunnies, quail and other small creatures; the lack of sunlight not allowing for much to grow here leaving vast open areas. And there was plenty of wildlife. Just in this short time, Dana had seen wild turkeys, grouse, quail and even some grazing sheep. No wonder it looked like the grass had been mowed in places. Shadow was beside himself running here and there chasing things, soon he disappeared. But she knew he’d find her later. Maybe he would even catch something. It just made it easier for her to enjoy the wildlife without it being scared away by the excitable wolf. It was peaceful here and the air smelled clean and fresh. She was thankful she had survived thus far and was actually, almost, happy to be here.
