From community member Ken Smith: Common sense is based on individuals perspectives. If a congressman knows he would be voted out of office if he supported the necessary spending reductions to balance the budget, it is common sense for him to withhold his support. My response: First, Ken, thank you for your comment. Intuitively, that sounds very true, and I dont challenge your conclusion. Its logically valid. What I would like to address is the important point your post brings forward about incentives. The word incentive simply doesnt get enough attention. If it did, we would have never strayed from our path. The political world -- and policy itself -- is all about incentives. Ill give two examples. When a politician takes money from donors, he is obligated to give the donors what they are paying for. The donors have an incentive to donate, the politician has an incentive to do their bidding, and we should really expect corruption to soon follow. There is a thin line between aid, and entitlement. When you reward people who make some bad choices in life with entitlements, like free food and other peoples money, you are creating an incentive for that person to continue their lifestyle, not change it. In turn, that person has no incentive to be productive, and sinks into a parasitic societal role. The answer to the problem of mis-aligned incentives is critical thinking, lead by a liberty philosophy. Its all we have EVER needed. Its the leadership Colorado needs today, and its what the entire country is so sorely lacking. If we want to restore the republic, WE have to change it this November. We have every incentive to do so. All the best, Mike Dunafon | dunafonforgovernor
