From its hundred foot high Maze walls overgrown with vines, to the handcrafted look of the Gladers’ camp compound, the film’s production design brought THE MAZE RUNNER to life. The Glade and the Maze were created in practical locations enhanced by visual effects. As envisioned by director Wes Ball and production designer Marc Fisichella, the Maze’s massive walls are both modern and ancient. The towering structure’s creeping vines and seemingly empty corridors mask a threat that terrifies even the most hardened and veteran Gladers. The hidden creatures, which the kids call Grievers, prey on those who stay too long in the Maze. This means the boys must get out of the Maze before its walls close. VFX Supervisor Sue Rowe from Method Studios in Vancouver, was inspired to pitch for the VFX contract with FOX by her daughter, who had read and loved the story. In this great interview, Sue speaks of the personable Wes Ball, the planning and shooting required to complement the VFX design, collaboration and the thrill of creating The Maze as a character itself -- almost alive in its essence. We loved speaking with Sue, and youll love her look at building the VFX for The Maze Runner.
