From my poetry page . . . Poetry is not a stale, outdated art. It is timeless and lives on in some of our most brazen, progressive contemporary voices. When Patti Smith moved to New York at the ripe age of 19, she went there to put down her roots as a poet . . . long before she got involved in rock and roll. Her erudition in classic poetry is astounding, but more importantly, she is a force of nature . . . contrary to her tiny frame, she has a large, dynamic, vital presence . . . a paradox of ruthless, candid grit and accessible, gentle affability . . . a soul that shines the most endearing beauty I think Ive ever witnessed in an artist. She is a hero of mine and whenever I feel the urge to choke back my own voice, I often think of her courage and I forge ahead and share. Here is my favorite song of hers, some verses taken directly from William Blakes The Divine Image: For Mercy has a human heart, Pity a human face, And Love, the human form divine, And Peace, the human dress.
