From my talk yesterday at University of Michigan: The most intellectually rigorous and influential criticism in Amercian society today occurs on the Comedy Channel. Steven Colberts schtick on the imaginary FU-435 employminator was a brilliant critique of Pentagon corruption. Colberts contraption was part plane, part tank, part ship and all crap...the best way to put Americans to work is by making things that dont. Comedians are supposedly silly people who get laughs saying serious things. In contrast, politicians and generals are supposedly serious people who get money saying silly things. Testifying before the Senate, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey stated, we are living in the most dangerous time in my lifetime. Dempsey, who is old enough to remember the Cuban Missile Crisis, should have drawn bellylaughs. More American are killed each year by falling televisions than terrorism. Instead, Congress gave him four percent of GDP. ... Our national dislogue will become more serious when we start listening to Colbert and laughing at Dempsey.
