From our archives: In those days there were Company pilots who flew the fixed-wing aircraft that ferried families down from Sabah and to from Labuan for holiday breaks in the two-year contract period. They wore dashing white uniform shorts with long white socks. Newly arrived, we were invited to a party - a sea of unknown faces. A kind man came over to talk, guessing that I knew no one. Hello, hows the baby settling? he enquired. I looked at him, and realised with delight that I had in fact met him: the pilot of the plane on which we arrived. I replied, with a clear, enthusiastic voice, into one of those inexplicable listening silences that happen at parties, Fine, thanks, great - I didnt recognise you with your trousers on!
