From our grantees at Peppertree: So often in Dog Rescue the old - TopicsExpress

From our grantees at Peppertree: So often in Dog Rescue the old adage, you cant tell a book by its cover turns out to be spot on. PEEWEE, a 10 pound 10 year old Papillon is old, small, deaf and mostly blind. But in truth he has the heart of a lion. His original owner loved him dearly, but she was a single Mom with 3 kids, and in the process of losing her home. The apartment she and her children were moving to did not accept pets. Distraught, she turned to Peppertree for help in finding PEEWEE a new home. His age and infirmities did not serve as roadblocks to us because he was a jolly friendly fellow with pep and spirit. He loved people, dogs and even cats. It was heartbreaking for the family to lose PEEWEE but we did reassure her that PEEWEE would be safe with us and we would find him a loving home. PEEWEES foster Mom, Julie U. welcomed him into her home and it was off to the Vet to get a check up and needed vaccinations. He was deemed to be in pretty good shape for his age and ready for adoption. His picture and description went up on the Peppertree website. And then tragedy struck. In a terrible mishap, PEEWEE was attacked by a much larger dog. Witnesses described PEEWEE as being shook by the neck like a rag doll. It was hard to imagine that he could survive such an attack. Julie and other Peppertree volunteers rushed him to the Vet for immediate surgery to attend to his wounds. It was then that we knew that PEEWEE had the heart of a lion because he survived the ordeal and after a period of recuperation was again ready for adoption. Peppertree volunteer Mary Ellen G. contacted a fellow dog lover, Bill H., who happens to have a soft spot for Papillons, especially elderly ones. He owns a small farm in rural upstate New York populated by dogs, cats, cows, chickens and even 4 fantail pigeons. A man with a big heart, Bill welcomed PEEWEE into his home and to join his clan. PEEWEE has now been on the farm with Bill since last August. A recent report from him says, PEEWEE has good days and bad days. Sometimes hes alert and aware of everything. Sometimes he gets confused and circles. Hes nearly always happy, though, and the mere thought of food will send him into his happy dance. I can tell that he gets a lot of comfort from being a part of the dog pack, following them in and out, taking his cues from their behavior. Hes almost deaf and almost blind - and sometimes a bit dotty, but otherwise doing well. In case you are wondering, Peppertree contacted the original owner to tell her that PEEWEE is safe and sound in his new home on the farm. She thanked us and told us that the news gave her much peace of mind. A fitting end for the little old, deaf, blind fella with the heart of a lion.
