From our storm operations team. I wont post many of these as not all are suitable for a general audience but this gives you a sense of preparations underway. --- Montgomery County Department of Transportation Storm Operations Center Winter Storm Event March 3, 2014 MCDOT Storm Summary Report No. 411.4 Please do not respond! Report Date: 3 March 2014, 0007 Hours Event Summary The National Weather Service has issued a WINTER STORM WARNING indicating the potential for significant snowfall and ice accumulations through Monday evening. Current forecasts call for up to two inches of freezing rain and sleet accumulation followed by 6-10 inches of snow accumulation; with the higher accumulations in the NW area of the county. Unfavorable Road conditions and travel disruptions are expected Monday morning as roads are expected to quickly become snow covered and icy. The storm intensity is expected to deliver precipitation at the rate of 1- inch per hour between the hours of 5am and 11am Monday morning. This translates to a messy Monday morning commute. Montgomery County Government and Montgomery County Public Schools will be closed on Monday. Snow Emergency plan went into effect at midnight. Parking in county owned parking garages and surface lots will be free on Monday, March 3. We encourage folks to move cars off the streets and into our garages and lots, where available, to facilitate snow removal. Caution should be used during any travel and please remain alert for ongoing plow/salt operations. Crews throughout the County have started treating major roadways and will continue until such time that plowing is deemed necessary. Travel disruptions within the County and region are expected to occur as roads quickly become snow covered and icy. These conditions are expected to continue through tomorrow. Alerts National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning, in effect from 7 PM Sunday night to 6 PM Monday. Accuweather Skyguard Rain Turning to Snow Warning, in effect from 12:30am to 2pm Monday. Weather Forecast Today: Snow, mainly before 1pm. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 20 degrees. North wind 14 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches possible. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear, with a low around 7 degrees. Wind chill values as low as -1 degrees. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 28 degrees. Wind chill values as low as -2 degrees. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the morning. Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 13. Light and variable wind. Pavement Conditions Primary/Secondary Roads – Snow covered Neighborhood Roads – Snow covered Current pavement temperatures Upcounty: 29-30 degrees Downcounty: 28-28 degrees Snow/Ice Depth: ½ to 1 inch Road Closures None at this time. Storm Operations Center Status The SOC activated at midnight Sunday to monitor weather and roadway conditions. SOC staff has contacted electric utility representatives to coordinate responses to potential power issues. Division of Highway Services DHS is in various stages in the treatment of all primary and secondary roads. Tree crews are available to respond to any tree related issues. Transit Services All Ride On Bus and Metrobus service will be suspended on Monday. Transit has provided 6 buses available for MCFR. Parking Management Currently we are plowing entrance ways and taking care of immediate walk ways closest to the garage entrances. PLD and P&R Garages and lots started plowing at 2am. Sidewalk crews will start plowing at 6am. Fleet Services Support staff will follow the DOT schedule in support of the storm operations. Traffic Operations Technicians will be available during the event to respond to any signal issues.
