From parent and community activist Alison Hawver McDowell: FYI-Masterman Advocates for Public Schools developed the following statement in support of Philadelphias teachers. We are in the process of gathering additional supporting names from the Masterman community, if you know of people who would like to sign onto this statement, please have them email me at optoutphilly at gmail dot com. In solidarity! I hope parents at other schools will follow suit. Masterman Advocates for Public schools condemns the School Reform Commissions decision to cancel the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers contract. They took this action without proper public notice and denied parents and community members the opportunity to provide meaningful input. Quality education depends on parents, students, and teachers working together and on the provision of adequate funding for our public schools. Full fair funding is our goal, and it doesnt require demeaning the very teachers who have stepped up over the past year to shield our children from the worst of this crisis. As parents of children in a public school with some of the highest achieving students in the state, we know first hand that teachers are not the enemy. The action taken by the SRC will make it harder to attract and retain the highly qualified and committed teachers necessary to maintain the long tradition of educational excellence at Masterman. We stand with Philadelphias teachers in their fight to secure a fair funding formula for public education that will benefit our students and all students in the state of Pennsylvania.
