From the Big Spring Fire Marshall: The Fire Marshall’s Office has been receiving a number of complaints about street food vendors selling their products around town. Several of the complaints were dealing with illness attributed to eating some of these foods such as tamales and burritos. We want to inform the citizens that while buying from these types of vendors in not illegal, them selling to you IS illegal if they do not have a Health Permit from the City of Big Spring. To this date we have not issued any such permits. The State of Texas sets forth the rules all food establishments must follow. The City of Big Spring has adopted these requirements and they apply equally to restaurants as well as mobile or temporary vendors. The violators we have been dealing with have been preparing food at home and then carrying it around all day selling it to the public at various locations around town. This is in direct violation of the State Rules and the fine will be up to $2,000. Most vendors and consumers are simply not aware at how great the risk is. “Food Borne Illness” is a life and death matter. The Center for Disease Control estimates that in the United States alone 1 in 6 Americans (48 Million people) are afflicted with Food Borne Illnesses resulting in 128,000 being hospitalized and 3,000 deaths. The Fire Marshall’s office is committed to reducing these types of incidents in our community. Citizens are encouraged not to buy from these vendors and to report them to the Fire Marshall’s Office. If you are able to get a description of their vehicle or license number as well please include that information when you report. We now wish to commend the many responsible restaurant owners and operators that have been so responsive to the training and inspections during this past year! We have seen major improvements in the compliance level with the State Rules and a dramatic reduction in consumer complaints.
