From the DNC: Yesterday, Chris Christie released a report with one goal: to exonerate himself from any wrongdoing in Bridgegate. While the people that Christie hired to conduct the inquiry saw fit to look into things like the romantic relationship of two former staffers, flowery language about Christie’s record as a prosecutor (page 42) and even a history of the George Washington Bridge (page 45) they failed to come to any conclusion on what really happened. The entire report is little more than an expensive attempt by the Christie administration to whitewash what happened. Before Christie meets the press later today for the first time in more than two months, the fact is that we’re still left with more questions than answers about why Bridgegate happened and how it happened. Here are a few of the many unanswered questions for Christie today: 1) Why were the lanes shut? Your report assigns blame to people who were not interviewed but fails to explain why your office ordered the lanes shut in the first place. 2) Since he reports to you as Port Authority Chairman, why didn’t you make David Samson available to the inquiry despite him being implicated? 3) How is Bridget Kelly’s personal life relevant to Bridgegate when she was acting in an official capacity in your office? How are her emotions relevant, but not the emotions of anyone else in the report including Bill Stepien? 4) The New York Times reported earlier this week that the investigation cost a million dollars, and a reporter for the Times is now suggesting the final tab could be as much as eight million dollars. How much did it cost? 5) Will you release the transcripts of all the interviews conducted during this inquiry so other investigators, the press and the public can come to their own conclusions about you and your aides’ conduct? While we still don’t know the specifics about what happened in Christie’s office in the run up to, during, and following the lane closure, we do know one fact beyond a reasonable doubt: Chris Christie created a culture in his own office where this type of misconduct could happen. Despite his efforts to distract attention with this report, there’s nothing Chris Christie can do to whitewash the multiple real investigations that are moving forward. And unlike Christie’s investigation, they will eventually get to the bottom of what actually happened in Bridgegate.
