From the Friday research archives: Most of my PhD research focused on replicating and analyzing rotating thunderstorms inside of a numerical weather prediction model. These storms, known as supercells, are responsible for a majority of the significant severe weather found each year across the U.S. We (my advisor Thomas Mote sponsored the project) found that the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF) does an admirable job of replicating the peak climatology (March-April-May) of severe weather occurrence across the central and eastern U.S. during the historical 10-year period of study. The study is now published online through the American Meteorological Societys Journal of Climate. journals.ametsoc.org/doi/abs/10.1175/JCLI-D-13-00777.1 Stay tuned for part two of the research, which examines how these storms may change in the future. Also, thanks to the tagged folks in this post, who served on my dissertation committee.
