From the Gov office - feel better ? No Dear Ms. Crow, Thank you for contacting the Governor’s Office concerning refugee immigrants. The Governor appreciates knowing your thoughts and has asked that I respond to you. The 166 placements of undocumented children in Arkansas have occurred without the involvement of any state agencies. They are carried out by a division of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. According to HHS, these children receive health screenings and immunizations before being placed with sponsors, and are not placed if they carry any contagious diseases. The sponsors are usually direct relatives or family friends, and are subject to background checks before being allowed to sponsor a child. These children are not currently classified as refugees. We have asked for, and begun to receive, better communication between HHS and our state agencies. However, there has been no discussion of developing larger placement centers in Arkansas similar to those established in border states. Additional individual placement of children may continue to occur. I hope you find this information helpful. Thank you for contacting the Governor’s Office. Sincerely, Shelly Powell Office of Governor Mike Beebe State Capitol, Room 120 Little Rock, AR 72201 Office (501) -683-6433 Fax (501) 682-3596 [email protected]
