From the Mannerisms of Supplication and the Causes for its Response: One- Sincerity for Allah. Two- The person begins by praising Allah and glorifying Him then by supplicating that peace be made upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, and to complete one’s supplication with it. Three- Asking with firm resolve and having full conviction that it will be responded to. Four- Being persistent when supplicating and not being hasty. Five- Supplicating with attentiveness. Six- Supplicating in times of ease and in times of hardship. Seven- One only supplicates to Allah alone. Eight- One does not supplicate against one’s family, wealth, children, or against one’s own self. Nine- Supplicating with a voice that is not too low and not too loud. Ten- Confessing one’s sins, seeking forgiveness for committing them, and acknowledging Allah’s blessings and being grateful to Him for them. Eleven- One must not recite the supplication in a rhyming and musical style. Twelve-One must observe humility, humbleness, endeavor, and fear for Allah (when supplicating). Thirteen- Repelling injustices by making repentance (to Allah). Fourteen- Supplicating three times. Fifteen- Facing the direction for prayer. Sixteen- Raising both hands when supplicating. Seventeen- If possible then one should perform al-Wudhoo (ritual washing) before supplication. Eighteen- One does not transgress when supplicating. Nineteen- When one is supplicating for others then he should start with himself first then with those whom he is supplicating for. Twenty-One should seek nearness to Allah by calling on Him with His beautiful names and lofty attributes or by way of a righteous deed that the one supplicating uses for himself or by the supplication of a righteous person who is living (as opposed to asking from one who is deceased). Twenty One-One’s food, drink, and clothes should be earned though permissible means. Twenty Two-One does not supplicate to commit a sin or to break off family ties. Twenty Three-One should enjoin the good and forbid the evil. Twenty Four-One should stay away from committing all acts of disobedience.
