From the Pastors Pen January 4, 2015 It is true, we are in a spiritual warfare day after day. The enemy is relentless. His tactics, while familiar and often repeated, continue to frustrate and defeat us. We lose, not because Satan’s power is greater. It isn’t. “He that is within you is greater than he that is in the world.” We lose because we capitulate. We cave in. We surrender, all the while refusing to follow the exit signs plainly set out before us. “There is no temptation but that is common to man, and God will with the temptation provide a way to escape!” Martin Luther, that crusty old Monk of the early reformation, once shared: “Once upon a time the devil said to me, “Martin Luther you are a great sinner, and you will be damned.” ‘Stop, stop, said I; ‘one thing at the time”. I am a great sinner, that is true, though you have no right to tell me of it. I confess it. So, what next?” You say: “therefore I will be damned.” I say to you, that is not good reasoning. It is true that I am a great sinner, but it is written “Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners”. Therefore I shall not be damned, I shall be saved! Now go your way.” So, I cut the devil off with his own sword, and he went away mourning because he could not cast me down by calling me a sinner.” That Satanic tactic is as old as hell and sometimes even against the atoning grace of Jesus it continues to be a successful tactic as a violation of the influence and testimony of Christians. Perhaps a new look at the armor of God may be in order for each of us. This war of the ages is winnable by a people who are intentionally “strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.”
