From the RNLI website... Well done Elan! :D Barry-Dock-RNLI-lifeboat-called-to-swimmer-in-trouble-at-Whitmore-Bay Sun, 17/08/2014 - 8:45pm Byline: At 7:20pm this evening, volunteer crew of Barry Dock RNLI lifeboat station were paged to launch the lifeboat immediately to assist a swimmer in trouble at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island. Page Content: The swimmer was with friends who tried to rescue the young man, but started to get into difficulties themselves. As the lifeboat was launching, kayakers in the area were able to assist the swimmers and help them to the shore. The Bristol Pilot Cutter, based in Barry, also responded to the urgent call for assistance. Hugh Davies, Coxswain of the Barry Dock RNLI lifeboat said always swim at a lifeguarded beach and respect the water. Swimming in the sea with tides and wind against you can be much tougher than swimming in a pool. If you spot anyone in trouble in the water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. The kayaker who rescued the young man was our very own Elan Winter! Elans sprint training really paid off as he reached the scene well before the rest of us, or the coastguard for that matter! A lesson in why all sea kayakers should carry VHF radios. If we hadnt had them with us we would not have picked up the call-out and the outcome could have been rather different.
