From the Refugee Advocacy Network: The Opening of the new - TopicsExpress

From the Refugee Advocacy Network: The Opening of the new Parliament is an important opportunity for all of us who oppose the asylum seeker polices of the Abbott Government to demonstrate our disapproval and to demand a change in the policies of the government. We would expect to attract national media attention. A similar action was organised in 2010 and people travelled from a number of states to participate. We would expect that with both major parties adopting even harsher polices, many people will be wanting to express their disgust at the current polices. The date for the Opening of Parliament will be announced shortly, but is likely to be in late October or Early November. Buses will be co-ordinated from Melbourne – and other cities. We hope that people will travel to Canberra from all parts of Australia, to show the breadth of concern about these issues. We are seeking your response to this email. We need to know how much support there is within your group for a contingent to travel to Canberra for the Opening of Parliament ( date to be announced). If there is not sufficient support for this time, the alternative would be for the first sitting of Parliament in the new year – probably February. We need an indication of numbers of people interested in going to Canberra by Saturday 21 September, as a discussion with representatives of groups in other states will be held on Sunday 22 September. Please email Marie by Sat 21 September at to indicate what numbers from your group might attend in October/ November.
