From the Rev. Deacon Larry Barnhill Reflection for 1 April 2014 Taking a look at Matthew 23:29-31 is it possible to say that you see hypocrisy within yourself and if you do why is it that you feel that way? In today’s passage Jesus is calling us to truly look at how we live out our faith. Do we go about things putting up a false front, condemning others, finding faults, and loading them with burdens, while we ourselves go out and do the very things we condemn in others? As Disciples of Christ we are his commanding general in the areas where we are planted. As such we are called to be leaders. A leader leads by example and gets others to do things because they want to, not because they have to. Christian leaders do the same thing but motivate others to do it for Christ because they want to, not because they have to. When we become like the Pharisee or the Sadducee we put the emphasis on getting others to do things out of a sense of duty and obligation, while we go about proclaiming on the outside what we want them to do and give up, while we secretly embrace that sin. God sees the inside, the heart and core of the person. Man sees the outside. What is more important in your Christian life, appealing to your fellow fallen beings or appealing to and bringing Glory to God your Father?
