From the Stardust News . . . Let it Shine I and the Father are One By: Ramon “ramgie” L. Almoneda (ramgie143@yahoo) May 12, 2014 The Sunday Gospel for next Sunday (May 18, 2014) is commonly called the “Last Supper Discourse”. It is in this Sunday Gospel reading (Jn 14:1-12) that Jesus said: “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, then you will also know the Father.” These words of Jesus are a legacy for us believers in the One true God. These words of Jesus become the base of our faith in Him. As the Way, Jesus’ mandate to love is supposed to be our guide for action; as the Truth, Jesus’ words and teachings are what we are supposed to believe and profess, and; as Life, Jesus is our source of hope for the celebrations of our felicity. Something more that we can learn from this Gospel passage is the truth that Jesus is God, that Jesus is the Son of God and that Jesus as Son is equal to the Father. As the second person of the Trinity, Jesus who is God made man though distinct from the Father is equal in dignity. He clearly expressed this when He said, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father . . . I am in the Father and the Father is in me”. In ordinary life, it seems unthinkable that the Father and the Son are equal. Many people would surmise that a father is always superior than his son. And what is more ridiculous is when ordinary fathers assert that his son should be submissive to him since he is just the son and especially because the Father is much older than his son. But in the mystery of our faith, the Father and the Son are truly equal since the Father and the Son co-existed at the same time. There is truth in the equality of the father and the son even in ordinary life since in reality a father exists only when the son begins to exist. I only became a father when my son was born. My fatherhood happened at the same moment of the birth of my son. I cannot be a father unless I have a son. If only fathers should recognize the dignity of their sons and sons respect the dignity of their fathers then it shall not be a difficult task to believe in the one true God who became man who Himself is the Way, the Truth and the Life.
