From the book “Kansas Curosities”, a gift from my daughter, Shelly. Since the recent interest in the Post Musical Museum in this group, this might be of interest. Recently someone wrote that the museum has been demolished. I don’t know if Bill is still living but if he is, he would be 94 years old. Most Kansas farms raise cattle, pigs, or wheat. Bill Posts family farmstead raises voices, in beautiful harmonic song. The hen house for example, rather than sheltering real hens and real eggs, has fiberglass ones. Bill Posts song “The Old Red Rooster and His Flock of Red Hens” starts playing. Likewise, the century old granary shelters Old Jack, a fiberglass mule. Push that buildings button and you get Posts hit “The Old Grey Mules”. The Post musical homestead, as it’s called, was homesteaded in 1874 by Harvey T. Post. When Harveys grandson and his wife Orvaleen were trying to decide what to do with the family farm, they made the logical choice. They decided to turn it into a museum of Bills illustrious six-decade career in the music business. Bill wrote what could be the theme song for this book, “Where In The World But Kansas?”. He has six albums and more than one hundred songs under his musical writing belt. Post and his first wife, Doree (she died in 1951) wrote songs for, among others, Lawrence Welk, Connie Stevens (“Sixteen Reasons” has sold more than two million copies) and the Lettermen. The prolific singing/song writing team also cut six of their own albums, including their first demo, which was recorded in the garage of Les Paul, the guy who invented the electric guitar. Tin Pan Alley, another of the farms five buildings, showcases Bill and Dorees many albums and records with labels such as MGM, RCA Victor, Capitol Records, and Rainbow Records. The Post Musical Homestead is officially open the third Saturday in May but if you call 620-442-4336 and ask nicely, Bill may give you a personal tour. Take U.S. Highway 166 out of Ark City.
