From the book of His Holiness Sakya Trizin "Freeing Heart and Mind" " MATCHLESS COMPASSION Compassion is the root of the Mahayana Dharma. Without com- passion, practice of the six perfections and the Vajrayana commit- ments of creation and completion, along with every other Dharma act, will belong to the lower vehicle. Kindness, compassion, and enlightenment mind are absolutely necessary. "Kindness" means to benefit others. Begin your meditation upon compassion with those who cause you harm. Sit in meditation posture in a secluded place. Take refuge and generate enlightenment mind. Visualize that you yourself are the tutelary deity and that your guru sits above the crown of your head. Directly in front of you, visualize those enemies who cause you the most serious harm. In your meditation, alternate between a con- tinuous stream of compassion and the reasons for that compassion. First, physically, make an effort to sit in the proper posture. Mentally, concentrate single-pointedly on those who harm you. Verbally, recite "Poor them, who cause harm to me." Recite this a hundred, fifty, or twenty-one times. Meditate on this continuous stream of compassion. Second, understand that this agent of harm was your own mother in previous lives. Therefore, repeat many times, "Poor them! How worthy of compassion this person is!" Why should you feel compassion toward this enemy? One reason is that the enemy has been your mother not only once or twice but many times. Think thus and recite "Poor them!" many times. Again, why should you feel compassion toward this enemy? Another reason is that each time they were your mother, they pro- vided boundless benefits. Think thus and recite "Poor them!" many times. And again, why should you feel compassion toward this enemy? Generally, a mother is someone who benefits you. If she is supposed to be benefiting me, why is she now causing me harm? Although this agent of harm was once my mother, she is now unable to control her own mind, like a deranged person. Therefore, she harms other sen- tient beings in general and her own children in particular. Thin k thus and recite "Poor her!" many times. Once more, why should you feel compassion toward this enemy? Because this enemy causes harm, he or she will fall into the Avici or other hells and will be tormented by terrible suffering. Think thus and recite "Poor them!" many times. Meditate thus, alternating between concentration, repetition, and thinking about the reasons for compassion. While doing this, tears may fall from your eyes, your hair may stand on end, and other physical signs of unbearable feelings may arise. If such signs occur, then genuine compassion has been generated, and you should think, "I must achieve perfect enlightenment, buddhahood, for the benefit of all sentient beings, primarily these agents of harm." Then wish that all sentient beings and these agents of harm attain the stage of tutelary deities. After that, meditate for a long time in the state of pri- mordial wisdom free of elaboration. If a cloud of conceptual thoughts arises, then dedicate the merit and conclude the session." ...
