From the post below, which Im just not gonna spellcheck. So to the 4th generation. We gave bear, the 4th generations first pet and the first to leave us to the oldest son and after a very long period of time they finally bonded and became inseparable. We explained what was happening to the cat to the kids and then let them spend a day with the cat should he die. At first they were kind of shell shocked, then indifferent, then cautious and anxiously friendly and finally a big mess of two young guys being with an ailing friend they had known their entire lives. Mom, dad and the two boys felt ready at least, if after spending the whole day together and saying or expressing whatever they wanted if he should die as the vet had told my parents. That night Bear decided to go to the top of the second floor steps and talk for hours, something he would do for ten or 15 minutes every now and then but never at such length. We think he would just go up there and talk to the dog, a huge friendly golden lab whose protection duties included the cat. It was obvious the dog loved doing it as well. And so they talked shop or about their favorites patches of grass or that new dog down the street. The next day the kids went to school, Bear saying goodbye to them at the door as was his practice. The day went by and the vet sent for Bear, who really needed to have some IVs for dehydration and his kidney ailment. In a second Bear died, leaving my tough, courageous, kind and sensitive brother to deal with the really sudden death. He cried for hours then told the kids. Everyone cried. They decided to drive down to the animal rescue place and get two new cats because the dog somehow already knew what had happened and he needed something to do as well. It was clear the dog was depressed and grieving, but his duties as chief protector, playmate, enthusiastic love dog that constantly checked the house inside ad out could not and would not just be abandoned. The new cats were brother and sister. Sister and Bear introduced each other immediately and the dog showed her his water bowl. Thats just how that dog rolls. The male cat hissed and gave dog a little attitude and stalked off under a couch. Everyone including the dog (with one eye always watching)ignored him and after two hours he got over himself and dog reintroduced himself and gave the cat some inedible, hairy thing he found under another couch and a new friendship was born. That night the dog, kids and cats all sleep in a pile on the den floor. It was a good day, really. So I asked my brother and said if you told me the second story first which one would I have believed. He said yes, you know I love you very much. I said yeah bro, weve never had a problem with the truth.
