From the team that adapted The Trojan Women for Syrian refugees (sadly, it didnt require much adaptation), a new production of Antigone. On the one hand, in light of the horrors faced by women in particular in the region, this is a natural choice; but it is also intriguing/challenging because the play is so contested in interpretation. During the Greek military junta of 1967-74, Antigone was the only tragedy permitted for production. The regime felt that Creon made their case persuasively, while opponents of the junta argued that Antigones claims were justified, and that the play depicted Creon as a tyrant. (Consequently, the play was performed on a weekly basis in Athens in the early 1970s). All of which, mapped out onto the situation in Syria, will make for interesting viewing. But more importantly, it gives refugees a voice: as one of them says, when you see other peoples disasters, your own crises become easier.
