From the time I was a kid climbing the apple and cherry trees in our backyard, Ive loved trees. Our backyard in Cleveland had no trees inside the fence, so we decided to plant one for every grandchild born into our family. Im hoping for a forest, but thats another story starring an obnoxious grandmother, so lets move on. This summer we planted three trees -- for Clayton, Leo and Jackie. Clayton is the oldest, at age 6, and we let him pick his. He went for alliteration, and is pictured standing next to what forever more will be called the Clayton Crabapple. He is hoping 19-month-old Leo will pick the lilac, and hesitated only a moment before figuring out that the serviceberry works for almost 5-month-old Jackie because her middle name is Sally. My plan is to photograph our grandchildren standing next to their trees every year. Clayton happily stood next to the Clayton Crabapple in early July. A few days later, he asked Grandpa to move a deck chair under the tree so that Grandma can take a picture of me lounging under my tree. Finally, I have a family member who not only asks me to take pictures, but wants me to print them for his own photo album. Do you have a story about a favorite tree? Do tell.
