From todays Syracuse Post-Standard: THE WEEK IN HISTORY The blizzard of ’66 The Onondaga Historical Association looks back at the week in local history: 48 years ago: In 1966 a blizzard paralyzed Syracuse and Central New York with 42 inches of new snow resulting from a primary storm centered east of Syracuse and a lake-effect storm from Lake Ontario. Winds of 40 to 60 mph piled up the dense, heavy snow in huge drifts, which made the storm especially brutal. Several people died, the Thruway and almost all other roads were shut down for days, with power cut off to many homes and buildings. Oswego was hit even harder, with 100 inches of snow over five days. — Daniel Connors of the OHA
