Fulani herdsmen razed down village in Adamawa, killing six About six persons have been killed by Fulani herdsmen in Adamawa state. The herdsmen attacked Masu village in Toungo local government area Friday and killed six people. A villager who escaped the raid said “six persons were killed and over 39 houses were touched yesterday in our village (Masu)”. Another source from the village who spoke to newsmen through telephone conversation said the attackers may have hired mercenaries of some Fulani herdsmen. He furthered that penultimate week there was an altercation between the villagers who are predominantly farmers and the herdsmen. He recounted that gunmen stormed the village at about 12 am and started touching houses indiscriminately, while they shot at fleeing victims. He stressed thus “there was an argument between herdsmen and local farmers in the area some time ago. “What happened was that local villagers found some cattle grazing on a farmland and reported the matter to a military patrol unit in the area, the military guys arrested the Fulani grazers and subjected to some kind of torture; I think they decided to punish the villagers for reporting the matter to military men”. He furthered, It is clear that they were angered because they have also boycotted the popular Ganye cattle market in protest”. Another villager who identified himself as Aliyu recounted that it was the peak of the tension that led to gunmen attacking the village on Friday which led to the death of four villagers on the spot with many others injured who are currently receiving treatment at Toungo Cottage hospital. He said that two of the suspected attackers were also killed by security agents while trying to escape bringing the death toll to six, Aliyu said the development has elicited palpable apprehension, even as residents of area have started leaving the area for safer places. Thirty-nine houses were razed down by the attackers he said. He lamented that the clashes between the farmers and herdsmen has become prevalent in the area. As at the time of filing this report yesterday, effort to get the police and army authorities to comment on the matter did not yield any result.
