Full time Family and Youth worker for The Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Kempton Park We are looking for a dynamic, young person that feels called to, and is passionate about work with youth especially from the ages of 14-18 years. The main duties of the youth worker are to build relationships with young people within our congregation and young people not yet churched in our demographical area; developing programs and promote the concerns of the youth in the ministry of the church. Other functions include: to gather youth through regular meetings and worship services, activities, Bible studies and fellowship; facilitate and train, together with the incumbent pastor, leaders for Sunday School, Junior Youth and Senior Youth. Previous youth work experience will be a recommendation. The post is a full time post. An interested person will work a three months probation period, after which a six year contract may be signed. We provide a small vehicle for the youth worker. We provide a cellphone with a limited cellphone contract Medical Aid and pensionfund available. If you are interested in the position, please send a short CV to the Chairman of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation Kempton Park, P O Box 7178, Bonaero Park, 1622 or email to [email protected] or to the Pastor ajwernecke@gmail Closing date for applications: 30th November 2013 Further information is available from the church office or Pastor Andreas Wernecke (0766 868686 or 011 979 7141), PROPOSED JOB DESCRIPTION: Expectation of the youth worker for Kempton Park Congregation Introduction The youth work within the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation Kempton Park is created as a missionary active post within the congregation to reach out to the youth (10 – 25 years old) of our congregation and the surrounding community, and the youth worker is to pursue the following goals: To share the Christian faith with children and youth in our congregation and surrounding area, and to lead the young in order that they may find a spiritual home within our congregation. To create opportunities for children and the youth to be invited to and experience Christian fellowship and thus given the opportunity to grow in their Christian faith. Together with the children and youth seek ways in which they may express their Christian faith. The goal of our youth work in essence should agree with the goals and strategy of our congregation. The youth worker, his/her assistants and the youth coordinating committee have the duty to develop the strategy of the youth work and determine the actions that need to be taken to expand the youth ministry within our congregation, and to regularly rethink and monitor the work and its progress. The youth worker is expected to become a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation – Kempton Park. Work areas Youth-group: (Confirmed – older) Develop a team of co-workers for the youth work Structure it, coordination and planning of the youth group Structure of worship services and camps, including in the circuit. Planning and conducting special activities. Junior youth: (10 – confirmed) Planning, coordinating and conducting work among the junior youth. Conduct kids-camps Develop a team of co-workers for this group Worship Services: Conduct worship services with groups from the youth and junior youth. Deliver sermons after having discussed it with the incumbent pastor. Regular attendance at worship services. Co-worker training: Attend and facilitate training of co-workers within the congregation and the circuit Confirmation classes – get involved with the incumbent pastor. Circuit work: Attend Pastor´s fraternals Contact with other youth groups in the circuit and the community Assist in Kailager leadership, (a youth camp at the Natal coast organized by the circuit) Sunday School: Participate in the planning sessions Cooperate with Sunday School teachers’ leader Support if and when necessary e.g. Teaching Committees: Member of congregational council Sunday School committee Youth Committee Further developments and responsibilities: Continuously inform yourself on all local and international levels concerning matters of youth work Regular meetings with Pastor and office staff. Draft a youth page for the congregational newsletter. The youth worker should be competent in computer skills such as word & power point. Recommendation by Jürgen Lier • I know that more and more congregations have a time percentage thing next to the various work areas or responsibilities that the youth worker/pastor is supposed to do. I don’t know if you have thought of that yet, but it really helps a person if they know that they are supposed to spend 50% of their time per week in youth-work and junior youth and 10% on training etc. It is quite difficult to do this and often the lines get blurred, but if a person has general guidelines then it will also help you as congregational council to evaluate the youth workers performance and results.
