Fun fact: On this day, in the year 1892, John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Tolkien was an orphan by age 12 and during the Great War, lost all but one of his close friends. As an author, he has written two books that have become cornerstones of English literature. Both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have sold over 100 million copies each and serve as the foundation of modern fantasy writing. Tolkien was also influential in converting C.S. Lewis from atheism to Christianity and was thus a major factor in the creation of The Chronicles of Narnia.
