Fun, fun, fun in the physics lab today. We tinkered with electric - TopicsExpress

Fun, fun, fun in the physics lab today. We tinkered with electric fields generated by a plasma ball in the first session of our Toy Physics seminar. We then built spectroscopes from CDs to try and figure out what gasses are inside the plasma ball bulb. Remarkably, one of the students was able to capture the spectrum produced by a fluorescent light bulb through her CD Spectroscope on her phones camera (see picture). Even more remarkable is the realization that these pretty little lines of color can unlock the electron shell configuration unique to each chemical element. Physics...it just makes you smile, doesnt it?
