Fundamentalist consumerism destroys self-reliance, creating people - TopicsExpress

Fundamentalist consumerism destroys self-reliance, creating people who feel completely dependent on others and who are thus more likely to turn over decision-making power to authorities This topic seems mildly inflammatory, but certainly hints at many issues that I think are worth considering. What I find troubling is that I am in many ways acquiescent to a system that commodifies people, chews them up, and subsequently spits them out. While I lay in bed at night and wonder how to change the system, I often arrive at the horrifying realization that my solutions are not only ineffectual, but likely result in great hardship for myself. Or presuming success, may help me by means of harming others, which seems contradictory to the initial motivation of helping others. Its all a little depressing if you think about it too hard, but It’s up to you to decide if you want to make the focus of your life technological, focused on new innovations to drive society forward, or essentially human, focused on the age old struggles of trying to get along, work together, and to find happiness. The point of course, is to make a choice. filmsforaction.org/news/8_reasons_young_americans_dont_fight_back_how_the_us_crushed_youth_resistance/
