Funny moment last night. Still tickles me. A Saturday night, right. I go to Trader Joes. Looking for dinner and a bottle of rum. Unclear on their closing hours. Walk up to the door. A young man there. As I approach he tells me theyre closed. I turn back, then turn around, walk back to see what hours are posted. Young man says they close at 9. Says its 9:02. I pullout my superior iPhone to see the time. Correct the clerk, say its actually 9:01. He smiles, I guess feeling validated. As I turn back for my car I thank him for being so helpful. He smiles even bigger. I say, No, I really mean it. You are very helpful. Poor bastard damn near peeing on himself at the affirmation of his customer service skills. An even bigger smile. I hear tell that irony and sarcasm has to it a certain cultural context or bias. Not all cultures get it. But I suspect it safe to say that in America the inability to register sarcasm is a clear signature of stupidity. Bless that young mans heart. For him lifes going to be a challenge.
