Funny news article: BY JOE MACENKA Richmond Times-Dispatch It was 8:30 on Friday morning when the call came in at Richmond police headquarters. An elusive fugitive had run a-fowl of the law and was on the loose in the department’s parking deck. Faster than you can say cock-a-doodle-doo, Richmond’s finest scrambled into action. It was time for a slow-speed pursuit, and when it was over, the fugitive, who goes by the eggstremely cagey name of Lu-Lu, was immediately sentenced to a life term in Powhatan County without the possibility of parole. There were no shots fired and no injuries reported as a result of the incident that — for a few minutes, anyway — captivated everyone as the feathers flew at the department’s headquarters on West Grace Street in downtown Richmond. Police spokeswoman Dionne Waugh said the incident began when Sgt. Faith Flippo arrived for work from her home in rural Powhatan and got out of her city-issued car in the parking deck, only to discover that her country hen named Lu-Lu had crawled into the car’s engine compartment and hitched a ride to Richmond. The hot hen jumped out of the car’s engine compartment and began scrambling around the parking deck, leading Flippo and fellow officers on a foot pursuit that included attempts to lure it out from under vehicles with the use of Combo snack treats. But while Combos may be a favorite of desperate humans who raid vending machines in search of anything resembling food, Lu-Lu wasn’t biting. She fled out of the parking deck and eventually ended up finding safe haven under a forensics unit van that the department had parked on Madison Street. Freedom, however, proved fleeting. Sgt. Lin Tyler and officer Kim Pulley, both of whom have chickens of their own at home, were able to get Lu-Lu out from under the van, and from there, the hen was placed in custody — in this case, a cardboard box with air holes. The box was secured appropriately, with evidence tape, and The Great Hen Hunt Of 2013 was over. There would be no lawyer appointed for Lu-Lu, no hearing, no chance to explain herself in front of a judge. Flippo put Lu-Lu back in her car — this time on a seat instead of in the engine compartment — and drove back toward Powhatan. Flippo was met halfway home by her husband, who took Lu-Lu back to Powhatan, no doubt to cluck about her wake-up call in the big city.
