Funny, the effect a piece of music can have on you, and the memories it can stir. I had a friend in college who used to play this song, and said it was about me. She was my best friend, and we did everything together. She even took me to my first music festival. Some time after she and I had been friends, a mutual guy friend overstepped bounds with me in the back of his car. In spite of the bruises and my emotional distress, she refused to take sides in the she said, he said argument, and became roommates with his girlfriend and their friends. I wasnt allowed to keep her company anymore, because I rocked the boat. I rethought my relationships and spent much of the next semester on my own and talking with the school psychologist, working through things, while she, a strict vegetarian, prepared steak dinners and chocolate cake for my attacker and their friends. After the summer, she found herself on the outs with her room mates and their associates, and tried to rekindle her relationship with me. I still loved her, but didnt particularly trust her, which angered her immensely. She would overcompensate, talk about how I had rescued her from her summer of depression, and told me that I was going to be a bridesmaid at her wedding. Not the maid of honour, because family dictated that her sister would take that role, but she and I would know who the maid of honour really was. She got married a few years later in Santa Barbara, well after I had moved here. I wasnt invited to the wedding. When this song came on, it was the first time Id heard it in years. There was a lurch in my chest, but no tears. Im not much one for weeping. I havent been for some time. To this day, there are few things that irritate me more than cowardice and a lack of conviction. So I write stories about people who are true to what they hold dear and pursue their desires, even if theyre things I disagree with, and who stick by each other through thick and thin.
