Further reaction from leaders on new GCSE and A level qualifications: The National Society for Education in Art and Design said: We welcome in principle the reform of art and design qualifications in consultation with teachers; and with practitioners and employers engaged in both further study, the creative industries and many diverse professions served by art craft and design. Art craft and design is an essential element in a broad and balanced education, providing and inspiring personal expression, cultural understanding, creative and practical responses, promoting imaginative risk taking to provide solutions to our material, emotional, social and virtual worlds. Carefully reformed qualifications will enable young people to contribute as confident learners, citizens and future professionals to the culture, creativity, economic success, leisure, material and emotional well being of our society within both national and global contexts. Alice King-Farlow, Director of Learning at the National Theatre, said: The National Theatre warmly welcomes the Government’s renewed commitment to Drama as an important and demanding subject at both GCSE and A level, alongside other arts subjects. We believe passionately that students should have the opportunity to study Drama as a discipline, as well as to take part in extra-curricular theatre. We look forward to contributing to the further development of the new qualifications. Sir James Dyson said: Design and technology is the only subject that combines creativity with science and maths in a practical format, giving young people an opportunity to understand how a product works and invent a better way. These are essential skills if Britain is to create and export the technology that other countries want to buy. We need to help teachers show how exciting a career in design engineering can be, so I’m delighted that the James Dyson Foundation was invited to shape the new GCSE and A Level qualifications.
