Further to this amazing fan of mine Jan (see below) who helped to influence my life by petitioning Ronan ORahilly (seen here pictured with me on the good ship) to reinstate me on Radio Caroline in the Spring of 66, Ive come across these letters in an old file (yes, Im a hoarder!). The first letter is from Chris Moore, the very first voice on Radio Caroline 50 years ago and the Programme Director when Tony Blackburn introduced me to him. You can see whats going on here, he wanted me out of my Solomon Agency contract before he would give me the job. This was in the hands of the Radio Caroline solicitors. The headed Radio Caroline note paper on Delias letter, (Ronans secretary), indicates Philip Soloman as a Director through typed-over letters, perhaps it was too expensive to print new stationary? This reveals the impact of Jans efforts and those of other listeners who wrote to Ronan on my behalf. The third letter is from my new agent Bunny Lewis which arrived shortly after Id left Caroline when I was quite broke and out of work other than a Christmas Pantomime coming up that Christmas. The date on the third letter reveals my jittery career, accepted by the BBC, whatever that meant. Soon after this, although the BBCs Head of Radio 1, Robin Scott, told me to be patient as there was at that time a full quota of DJs on the new station, I subsequently got the job on Radio Luxembourg and spent 16 formidable years with 208. So, Jan, here you have the evidence of your kindness and, to all the young DJs and wanna-be-DJs (including DMC members and supporters), I offer these archived memories to you to emphasise how important your listeners are to you and how you should never….ever…give up!
