The Finance Ministers’ Meeting will be held at the Cairns Convention Centre on September 20 – 21 2014. The Finance Ministers’ Meeting will be a much smaller event compared to the Leaders’ Summit in Brisbane. At this stage, there is no intention to lock down Cairns CBD. There will be some disruption to roads around the Cairns Convention Centre, and residents may notice an increased police presence. In October 2013, the Queensland Government passed the G20 (Safety and Security) Act 2013 (the Act). The Act allows police additional powers that are designed to keep the community safe and secure during the G20 events in Queensland. You can see the Act at legislation.qld.gov.au/ The declared area is simply the geographical area that the additional police powers within the Act may be used in. People will be able to go about their business as normal with minimal impact. The declared area in Cairns spans from the airport down into Cairns CBD. There will be no physical barriers or signage that people are entering the declared area. The restricted areas will be clearly marked, and will only be accessible to people with a genuine reason to access the area. In Cairns, the Cairns Convention Centre and the Cairns Showgrounds are restricted areas. Both the declared and restricted areas in Cairns will take affect from the 16th of September 2014. You can find detailed maps of the restricted and declared areas here. People who are planning on being in the Cairns CBD on the weekend of September 20-21 may experience some road closures and parking restrictions. The QPS recommends that people allow extra time to get to your destination if travelling near the Cairns Convention Centre.
