GALAPAGOS ISLANDS LANDBIRD PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS FIELD ASSISTANTS for the CHARLES DARWIN FOUNDATION (Charles Darwin Research Station). Duration: 3 months from mid January 2015. Application Deadline: 15th November 2014. Volunteers needed with interests in avian conservation biology. The assistants will get involved in the following activities of the Galapagos Landbird Conservation Plan: Collaborate with the Vermillion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus) ecology study, which takes place mainly in the highlands of Santa Cruz; Help the main investigator to determine the population status of the Galapagos Martin -Progne modesta- (Carry out surveys through its distribution area, visiting the main representative habitats; Help determining the causes of its limited population); Help developing new control methodologies for the Smooth-billed Ani (Crothophaga ani), with the collaboration of rangers from the Galápagos National Park; Collaborate with the Galapagos Flycatcher (Myiarchus magnirostris) Nestbox Project, which takes place at the Barranco -Charles Darwin Research Station- (Checking the boxes; Follow up of the breeding biology of the species whenever the boxes are occupied; Help in the banding of the breeding pairs); Participate in the bird census that will take in the different islands of the archipelago; Participate, whenever necessary, in the Mangrove Finch Project, Philornis Project, and other projects of the FCD. Stipend: This is volunteer position. Accommodation can be found at the Charles Darwin volunteer house (fee of 7 USD per night). The work schedule is typically Monday-Friday, with the weekends off. Volunteers must pay for their transportation to Galápagos. Qualifications: Volunteers should be hard working, responsible, very enthusiastic and patient. Previous experience with fieldwork, preferably with birds, is valuable. You must also be able to get along well with others and be fit, able to hike in harsh terrains. Bird identification skills and bird banding experience are a plus. Bachelor or Biology students will be given preference.
