GARC Application a Dangerously Provocative Attempt to Create Tension 9th July 2013 North Belfast MLA Nelson McCausland has condemned the application by the Greater Ardoyne Residents Collective (GARC) to hold a protest parade of 2,000 people coming on to the Crumlin Road at 4pm on 12 July. Mr McCausland said, “The application by GARC for a protest parade by 2,000 people on the Crumlin Road on 12 July is a dangerously provocative attempt to create tension and to intimidate. Last year this group made a mockery of a Parades Commission determination by leading a republican rabble out on to the Crumlin Road. They applied for a parade but what emerged bore no resemblance to a parade. Indeed that rabble included people who were responsible for hours of rioting, which involved the throwing of petrol bombs and the burning of vehicles. A burning car was also used as a moving firebomb to attack police officers and under cover of the rioting a dissident republican gunman tried to murder those same police officers. Many of the republican rioters who were arrested came from far away and had no real connection with Ardoyne. Moreover some of them have now received significant sentences for their actions. Dissident republicans wants to drag Northern Ireland back towards violence and the Parades Commission should not reward them.”
