GENESEE COUNTY/LeRoy Firefighters from seven counties participate in heavy metal rescue training in LeRoy Sixty firefighters from seven counties around NYS spent the weekend at a three day training event that centered around heavy rescue. The LeRoy Fire Department hosted the three day education program that was put on by T and R Rescue Solutions out of Bath, NY. Firefighters spent all day Friday at the Stafford Fire hall in a classroom setting. Saturday and Sunday was a hands on experience with demonstrations at Ron Coniber Trucking on Randall road. With five different accident scenarios set up around the yard, firefighters were able to learn how to crib and stabilize vehicles with the guidance of T and R Heavy Metal Rescue instructors. Tim Hogle, 2nd Assistant Chief with the LeRoy Fire Department experienced the training several years ago in a three day event held on the eastern end of the state. Hogle has been hoping to host an event in LeRoy for the past few years. Hogle says the heavy rescue education program is essential to keep up with the incidents that occur several times a week on major roadways like the NYS Thruway, Rt. 63, and Rt. 20. With hybrid trucks and propane powered vehicles making their way to the the WNY roadways its is important rescuers know how to approach an incident that requires extrication, stabilizing and cribbing. This was the first time the event was held in the WNY area.
