GENETIX FITNESS TIP #6. More About Sodium The body gets all of the sodium it needs daily from a healthy diet. Interestingly enough, the more unhealthy the diet, the more sodium you’re probably getting. That’s because bad diets normally include a lot of soft drinks and fast foods, which are typically soaring in sodium. Even so-called healthy foods can be sky-high in sodium. For example, Campbell’s regular line of condensed soups average 800 milligrams of sodium per cup. That’s a third of your daily limit if you’re eating a two thousand-calorie diet. Here’s one for you. One tomato has 100 milligrams of sodium. One cup of canned tomato sauce has 1482 milligrams. There’s a lot to be said for making your own tomato sauce fresh next time you have some spaghetti! Excess sodium has been linked to hypertension (high blood pressure). Approximately 90% of those who have strokes have a history of hypertension. Excess sodium can also be responsible for water retention and bloating but as ironic as it may sound the best way to get rid of these very problems is to drink water. This is because water is a transport and flushes out excess sodium.
